Nature-based climate solutions (NbCS) include enhanced soil or biomass carbon sequestration and avoidance of landscape emissions of CO2, CH4, N2O and other greenhouse gasses. However, many solutions and their quantification techniques remain under-examined. Urgent research needs include better understanding of the carbon mitigation potential, environmental trade-offs or co-benefits, long-term management and permanence, economic and political feasibility, and other challenges to implementation and success across an array of NbCS techniques. Quantifying short- and long-term changes in carbon stocks, emissions rates, and related environmental processes will provide a crucial baseline for the successful implementation of nature-based climate solutions. Additional research is needed on implementation science, helping determine best practices for social change via economic, regulatory, educational or other means. Therefore, this special collection calls for submissions that seek to increase accessibility (finance, geography, inclusivity) and robustness (reproducibility, verifiability, permanence) of NbCS across temporal and spatial scales, landscape types, and management regimes. This collection provides an opportunity to bring the best available science to NbCS applications, and test advances and challenges to support implementation and management strategies.
To submit your manuscript, please use the submission site for AGU Advances, JGR-Biogeosciences, Water Resources Research, Earth's Future, JGR-Atmospheres, JAMES and select the collection’s title from the drop down menu in the Special Collection field of the submission form.
