The U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program Office has sponsored/co-sponsored and convened multiple science groups led by the science community over its +20 year history.
For instance, the Office used to biannually convene the Carbon Cycle Science Steering Group which concluded its 30th meeting as its last one in 2015. In the past, the Office used to co-sponsor the biennial Investigators' Meeting of the North American Carbon Program (NACP) by providing financial support for students and early career scientists as well as invited keynote speakers. Since 2015, the Office has been sponsoring the meetings of the Science Leadership Group of the NACP. The NACP is a community-led research program of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program.
These and other science group meetings and public engagement activities sponsored/co-sponsored by the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program and led/co-led by the science community with the Program Office, have often resulted in or helped to develop groundbreaking new initiatives and products, advancing follow-up research, science planning, coordination and communication activities. Examples include major assessments, U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plans (1999, 2011), Open Science Meetings, science coordination networks, publications and workshops, Intensive Campaigns and Syntheses.
