Special ESA Session: Beyond the State of the Carbon Cycle: Promoting and Championing Trans-disciplinary Science and Diversity in Global Change Science
SS 1: Beyond the State of the Carbon Cycle: Promoting and Championing Trans-disciplinary Science and Diversity in Global Change ScienceMonday, August 12, 2019, 10:15 AM - 11:30 AM
Kentucky International Convention Center- L016
Synopsis
Over two decades of interagency carbon cycle research collaborations have yielded a plethora of societally relevant science opportunities. The Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR2) (USGCRP, 2018) assembled a diverse multinational team of scientists and science funders to assess the last decade of such science advances across North America. While highlighting SOCCR2 outcomes, this special session deliberates ideas for advancing previously nascent trans-disciplinary research topics in carbon science and management such as those on coastal carbon, urban-human interactions, land management, integrated GHG observations and negative emissions. Going beyond what current collaborations have already achieved, what else and how else can we explore, initiate, coordinate implement and achieve innovation in collaborative ecological science across borders? How can we further promote and champion diversity in the sciences and in perspectives, going beyond what has already been done and bridging the science and practice of carbon management in socio-ecological systems? How can we better converge across disciplines and geographic realms around carbon as researchers, practitioners, and managers of different segments of ecological science? This session will welcome and highlight new ideas, connections, challenges and opportunities around these questions.
