The USGCRP's US Carbon Cycle Science Program participated in the Global Carbon Project Scientific Steering Group (GCP SSG) Meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco from April 13-15, 2012. Dr. Gyami Shrestha, Director of USGCRP’s Carbon Cycle Science Program Office, presented the Program's 2011-2013 activities and plans. Dr. Shrestha talked about the goals of the USGCRP's new Strategic Plan and a 2011 Carbon Cycle Science Plan, also providing an overview of recent US carbon policies and online tools. The main items of discussion at this meeting were the carbon‐water‐energy nexus, urban energy and carbon, emerging links between national and international climate policy issues, global CH4 budget, REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP), earth carbon pools, extreme variability in the carbon system, ocean carbon and Future Earth. Participants included the two GCP SSG co-chairs - Director of the UK based Tyndall Centre, Dr. Corinne Le Quéré and the Associate Director of France based Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement, Dr. Philippe Ciais – and other internationally renowned carbon cycle scientists from the US, South America, Europe and Asia such as Drs. Josep Canadell (CSIRO), Rob Jackson (Duke), Chris Sabine (NOAA), Glen Peters (CICERO), Shilong Piao (Peking University), Yowhan Son and Woo Kyun Lee (Korea University), Nebojsa Nakicenovic (Vienna University of Technology), Gernot Klepper (Kiel Institute), Stephen Plummer (ESA) and Sybil Seitzinger (IGBP).
