Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Academy Announcement and Workshop Update
Announcing the NACP – US Carbon Cycle ScienceProgram Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Academy
October - December 2022
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is a hot topic right now – there have been a flurry of various activities recently1. As a community of practice focusing on carbon cycle science in North America and adjacent oceans, NACP is poised to make significant contributions in this arena as new programs are initiated and existing CDR activities expand and grow. Perhaps the most relevant area for NACP engagement is the development and implementation of robust measuring, monitoring, and verification (MMRV) for CDR activities, and we are planning an in-depth workshop on this topic in early 2023.
However, we recognize that CDR as a conceptual framework and practice may be relatively novel for many in the NACP community. Thus we are offering a “CDR Academy” that will offer introductory material on the basics of CDR in different Earth systems, including:
- A curated list of introductory resources (reports, videos, articles, etc.) on CDR
- A series of 1-hour webinars on CDR in different ecosystems/contexts, such as oceans and coasts, geological reservoirs, natural and working lands, and the atmosphere. These webinars will be recorded for future viewing and reference.
- A panel discussion with webinar presenters discussing cross-cutting themes, research needs, and potential opportunities for collaboration.
Schedule of Webinars
Thursday 10/20 12pm ET: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Mineralization (Jarad Daniels, Global CCS Institute)
Thursday 10/20, 2pm ET: Atmospheric CDR in deep decarbonization (Emily Grubert, University of Notre Dame)
Friday 11/4, 2pm: Ocean and Coastal CDR (Jessica Cross, NOAA PMEL)
TBD: Wetland and Aquatic Ecosystems (Zhiliang Zhu, USGS)
TBD: Working Lands (Kyle Hemes, Amazon)
Please note:
These activities are part of the early announced USCarbonProgram-NACP CDR Workshop plan.

1For example: the Ameriflux workshop this summer on nature-based climate solutions, the US Dept. of Energy’s Carbon Negative Earthshot, interagency coordination of CDR efforts (I-CDR-C), and the US Ocean Carbon & Biogeochemistry workshop on marine CDR, to name just a few. And at AGU this year, the US Carbon Cycle Science Program and the I-CDR-C have organized a session: B046: Science-based Carbon Removal Strategies, Monitoring, Measurements, Reporting and Verification across Terrestrial, Atmospheric, Oceanic and Societal Dimensions.
