The Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG), via the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program, has initiated plans for the 2nd State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR-2) as a follow-up to the 1st SOCCR (2007) which was a Special Assessment Product (SAP 2.2) of USGCRP’s 2nd National Climate Assessment (NCA). The focus of SOCCR-2 is on the scientific understanding of U.S. (national and biogeographical regions) and North American carbon cycle stocks and fluxes, in the context of and interactions with global scale budgets and climate change impacts in managed and unmanaged systems. Carbon stocks and fluxes in soils, water (including oceans), vegetation, aquatic-terrestrial interfaces (coastal/ estuaries/ wetlands), human settlements, agriculture, forestry etc. are included. Relevant carbon management science perspectives and support tools for supporting decisions, as addressed in and related to the White House Climate Action Plan (2013), US Carbon Cycle Science Plan (2011) and National Climate Assessment, USGCRP 2012-2021 Strategic Plan (formally called the National Global Change Research Plan 2012-2021), and Global Change Research Act (GCRA) of 1990 will be included in this assessment. In addition to identifying uncertainties, rising opportunities for improving measurements and projections in the carbon cycle will also be identified.
Some SOCCR-2 public engagement events are listed below:
Oral Session Title: Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report (2016):“ A Special Scientific Assessment of Current Status and Opportunities I"
Poster Session Title: Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report (2016):“ A Special Scientific Assessment of Current Status and Opportunities II" Posters
Town Hall Title: Decadal USGCRP Science Assessment of the Carbon Cycle in the US and North America: The 2nd State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR-2)
The February 2, 2016 1-day public forum will present an opportunity for interested parties and stakeholders to provide non-consensus-based individual input on proposed SOCCR-2 themes. The February 2, 2016 public forum will be convened at the NOAA Center for Weather & Climate Prediction, 5830 University Research Court, College Park, MD 20740. Participants must register to attend this event. To register and for details on the event, please follow the detailed instructions here. This event will involve an overview of the scope, themes and organization of SOCCR-2, followed by topical breakout sessions aligned with the proposed notional themes of SOCCR-2.
