Session title: Science-based Carbon Removal Strategies, Monitoring, Measurements, Reporting and Verification across Terrestrial, Atmospheric, Oceanic and Societal Dimensions

Session Description: The 2022 IPCC WG III's 'Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change' report concluded that preventing 1.5˚C of global warming will require substantial carbon dioxide removal (CDR) efforts in addition to continuously significant reduction of global GHG emissions. Afforestation, reforestation, improved land management practices, bioenergy carbon capture/storage, direct air capture, and coastal/ocean-based CDR of 11 billion tons CO₂/year by 2050 and 20 billion by 2100 may likely be needed to prevent 2˚C rise. In this context, we would like to spotlight pertinent CDR science. We welcome presentations on nature- and/or technology-based research and approaches that could inform innovative and timely strategies for multi-agency (U.S. government) collaborations and partnerships with the non-federal sector (e.g., foundations, industries, universities, states). The focus should be on the scientific basis for carbon monitoring, measurements, reporting and verification (MMRV) for effective and efficient CDR strategies with embedded societal considerations.
